NEWS ITEMS 2008
Family says Moses Cannon was shot because he was gay, and his killing should be treated as a hate crime
by Robert A. Baker / The Post-Standard
Saturday November 15, 2008, 11:22 PM
http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2008/11/syracuse_police_identify_shoot.html
Moses “Teish” Cannon was openly gay, and his family said today that is why he was shot and killed Friday night. His death should be treated as a hate crime, they said.
Cannon, 22, of 404 Arthur St., was shot about 8:45 p.m. Friday as he sat in a car parked in front of 411 Seymour St., police said. His brother Mark Cannon, 18, and a third person were in the car when a man with a gun walked up, Syracuse police said.
The gunman fired into the vehicle and hit both Moses and Mark Cannon, who were in the front seats, the report said. Mark Cannon, who was in the driver’s seat, drove the car about 13 blocks from Seymour Street to Arthur Street, where police found them, the report said.
The Cannons were taken by ambulance to University Hospital, where Moses Cannon was pronounced dead and Mark Cannon was treated for a non-life threatening injury.
Moses Cannon was killed, his mother said, because he was gay. “This death was senseless, and I’m very angry,” Roxanne Green said.
Green said she received a phone call at 5:30 a.m. Saturday from a woman who claimed to know the circumstances of the killing. The caller told Green that her son was shot because the shooter objected to his sexual orientation.
Mark Cannon agrees that his brother was lured to Seymour Street. The brothers had received a call from a girl they knew. She wanted them to come to Seymour Street to talk, Mark Cannon said. He said they were still talking with the girl when the shooter walked up.
Because it is an active homicide investigation, police won’t comment on a motive for the shooting, said Sgt. Tom Connellan, speaking for police.
Green talked lovingly about Moses Cannon and said she accepted who he was. “That’s the life he chose. That’s who he wanted to be,” Green said about her son.
Green said her son was very outgoing. “He got along with everybody,” she said.
Cannon’s family accepted his sexual orientation. Pictures of Cannon in women’s clothing were on display in the family’s living room, and the family selected one for The Post-Standard to publish. Often when family members spoke of Cannon, they used “she” to refer to him.
Dante Haynes, who described himself as Cannon’s lover, sat at the dining room table tonight with Cannon’s parents and family. “Teish” is tattooed on his right forearm. “I loved her, too,” Haynes said. “She will be missed.”
“Teish was loving, caring and compassionate,” said Rhonda Gary, Cannon’s aunt. “She carried herself with respect.”
The family did not mince words. Cannon’s death, they said, was a hate crime. The family said the person who shot Moses Canon deserves a sentence of life in prison without parole. “I feel the person who lured him there (to Seymour Street) should get the same,” Green said.
Moses Cannon was unemployed but formerly worked as a supervisor with the Motel 6 on Carrier Circle, his mother said.
The person who was in the back seat was not injured, police said. They would not identify that person.
Police are still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 315-442-5222.

MEMPHIS, TN – Duanna Johnson was found shot to death in North Memphis, according to her lawyer.
Memphis police say it happened just before midnight at Hollywood near Staten Avenue, Sunday, November 9, 2008.
According to detectives, when officers arrived at the scene, they found the body lying in the street. Police say a witness heard gunfire and then saw three people running away from the scene. Investigators do not have any suspects at this time.
Lawyer Murray Wells confirmed to Eyewitness News that the person who was killed is his client Duanna Johnson. He says Johnson was often in the area where she was killed.
Murray says Johnson was trying to leave Memphis and go back to her hometown of Chicago. According to Murray, Jonson was just about homeless trying to live in Memphis. He says the apartment where Jonson was living did not have power. Murray says he was helping Johnson buy a bus ticket to Chicago.
Johnson was the subject of an alleged video taped beating that happened in June of 2008. Johnson, who had been arrested on a prostitution charge, said former Memphis Police Officer Bridges McRae beat her after making derogatory remarks about her sexuality. Johnson said another man, Officer J. Swain, held her down during the beating. Both officers were fired from the department.
Johnson was suing the city for $1.3 million.
Memphis Police are asking anyone with information about Duanna Johnson’s death to call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.

LGBTT March For Slained Transsexual İnce

Bawer ÇAKIR
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite and Transsexual (LGBTT) Rights Platform held an activity in Kızılay, Ankara and protested the death of Dilek İnce, who was killed by a gun attack.
After İnce’s funeral, a group of about hundred people marched down the Yüksel Street wearing shrouds and protesting the hate killings against the member of the LGBTTs.
“We do not know who is next”
Reading the press release on behalf of the group, Serra Can asked, “how long are you going to watch our getting killed by fueling homophobic and transphobic hatred.”
Stating that İnci was killed by the hetero-sexist hatred, Can said, “We are sad and angry, because we have come here from the cemetery. We are angry, because we do not know which one of our gay and transsexual friend is next.”
“Who killed transsexual İnce at the Capitol by a pump-gun and will they be caught? Who killed gay Ahmet Yılda by a gun and why the Istanbul police has not found the killers yet? Who forced gay Ege Tanyürek to suicide in Adıyaman.”
“Prime Minister, is it not a crime to discriminate between the citizens?”
Saying that they are in fear and anxiety, Can called out to the Prime Minister.
“Mister Prime Minister we are asking you if the homosexuals and transsexuals are not citizens. Is it not a crime to discriminate between the citizens? We are asking you if their killers will be found. Will the prosecutors and the judges quit releasing them because of excessive provocation? We are asking you who will protects our lives and provide our security. We are in fear and anxiety, because we do not know how many homosexuals and transsexuals will the Prime Minister’s citizens who lost their patience kill? We are curious if Mister Prime Minister will create the just and peaceful society by using fear?
Can said the doors their knock to receive justice are not opened to them.
“We have knocked their doors, we have screamed, we have worn shrouds…They kill us just because we are homosexuals, just because we are transsexuals. We seek justice, but we do not get any. It is not much we want; we just don’t want to be killed for out identities of sexual orientation.”
Announcing that “The killing of homosexuals and transsexuals is a political act, we know the killers, the platform leader said, “We will not quit going after these events.”
After the press release was read, the participants marched to the building of the Prime Ministry Human Rights Presidency, clapping their hands and chanting slogans. Demanding the murderers must be caught, they left a symbolic shroud in front of the building.
Her friends and her husband bid farewell to İnce
İnce was killed by a gun shot received at an attack in Etlik, Ankara. More than 70 people, including her friends and her husband, were at the funeral.
Umut Güner of Kaos GL told bianet that despite the belief that the people of LGBTT orientation die alone, İnce was not alone. (BÇ/EÜ/TB)

Sacto trans death called ‘suspicious’
Published 10/02/2008
by Dan Aiello
Bay Area Reporter – CA,USA
Sacramento police are calling the death of a young transgender woman
“suspicious” and have assigned the case to homicide investigators.
The body of Fernando “Margorito” Molina, 22, of Sacramento was
discovered by a group of people fishing at about 12:45 p.m. Sunday,
September 21 in the river, approximately one mile southeast of the
Highway 160 bridge, a coroner’s official said. Sergeant Kirk
Campbell of the Sacramento Police Department’s homicide unit has
been assigned the case.
The case is “definitely suspicious,” said Sergeant Matt Young,
Sacramento police public information officer. “What I can tell you
is this person drowned.”
A news release issued by Konrad Von Schoech, also a public
information officer for the police department, further stated,
“Based on all the circumstances surrounding this incident, at this
time, investigators from the Sacramento Police Department are
looking into the case as a suspicious death.”
According to both Young and the news release, Molina was in the
process of transitioning from male to female and represented herself
as a woman. Molina was known to friends and family as “Ruby.”
Investigators are now trying to piece together the events and days
leading up to Molina’s death. Molina was known to frequent the Watt
Avenue and Auburn Boulevard corridors as well as downtown
Sacramento.
“Someone might have seen [Molina] in those areas,” stated Young. The
area where Molina’s body was located was not listed as one of the
places Molina was known to frequent.
According to the initial responding officer’s report, no search of
the area was conducted at the time the body was discovered. However,
Young told the Bay Area Reporter that since then, “a thorough search
of the area has been conducted by law enforcement.” Young declined
to comment on what evidence may have been recovered.
“I can’t disclose any of that information,” said Young.
Lester Neblett, executive director of the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian
Center, said that while he cannot by law disclose the names of
clients that use the center’s support or clinical services, he told
the B.A.R. “Socially, I did not know this person.”
“From the center’s perspective, it’s important that this person’s
identity has been determined,” said Neblett.
While Neblett said that he does not have access to the contact
information for Molina’s friends and family, “We’re here to be
supportive, that’s our role, and that includes parents and friends
and families who might feel that because their child was different
they have no one they can talk to. That’s what we’re here for.”
The Sacramento transgender community is “tight knit,” according to
David Nylund, Ph.D. the director of clinical services for the
community center. Yet the B.A.R. could find no one who knew Molina
personally.
“It’s a larger community then people realize,” explained Nylund, who
said the center sees more than one new transgender client a week and
has a “well-attended” weekly adult transgender support group of
between 20-30 people.
Anyone who knew the victim, the victim’s recent whereabouts, or who
has other information about this case is asked to contact the
Sacramento Police Department at (916) 443-HELP. A $1,000 reward is
currently being offered.

Police have no motive in transvestite’s death
The suspect indicted in the man’s killing might have lived with him in the same car
By Gary T. Kubota
[email protected]
WAILUKU » The stabbing death of a transvestite last month under a highway overpass in Makiki was not a hate crime, Honolulu police Detective Theodore Coons said Thursday.
Coons said that while the motive is still not known, the victim, Jason L. Namauu, and his alleged assailant, Joel Chris Allen, knew each other and appeared to have been living in the same car.
Namauu, 35, a former Maui resident, was allegedly stabbed repeatedly by Allen in the car near Cartwright Neighborhood Park in Makiki at about 6:30 p.m. July 17.
Allen fled the vehicle after witnesses tried to stop the assault, police said.
Police arrested Allen later in the parking lot at Times Super Market.
Allen, held in lieu of $150,000 bail, was indicted July 22 by an Oahu grand jury on a charge of second-degree murder.
Allen has been convicted of auto theft, second-degree theft and three third-degree assaults, including one of a police officer.
Namauu was known as “Jay” to his friends and relatives on Maui and “Jaylynn” to those who knew him as a transvestite in Honolulu.
Namauu, who attended Baldwin High School but never graduated, lived with his parents in Kihei until his early 20s and enjoyed swimming at Makena Landing and Big Beach in South Maui, said his sister-in-law Crystal Namauu.
“As far as I know, he really had a good heart. He was a sociable person. He was a good person,” she said.
“People tease him because of what he was. He would just tell you straight what he thinks, but he wouldn’t let it bother him.”
She said she hardly saw Namauu when he moved to Lahaina and “started getting more and more into the world he wanted to be in.”
Namauu forged a check for $984 from a condominium rental company on Maui in September 1996.
He was placed on probation for five years but violated his probation by failing to report to his probation officer and failing to obtain a substance abuse assessment.
Namauu’s probation was revoked, and he eventually was sentenced in March 2002 to five years in prison with a minimum of 20 months’ incarceration.
After being released from prison, he was convicted of two misdemeanors, including a prostitution conviction in April.
George Namauu Jr. said he was unaware his brother had been released from prison in 2006 and was living in Honolulu, until a police officer came to his door last month to tell him his brother had been killed.
He said his mother wrote to Jay in prison but had her letters returned every time.
“He never contacted nobody. He just wanted to do his own thing,” he said. “From an early age he was kind of on the feminine side. … They are human like us. He was my brother.”
The family was scheduled to hold a celebration of life ceremony this morning at Makena Landing.

Rallies in Response to Anti-Transgender Murder
Denver, CO – On Thursday, July 17, Angie Zapata, an 18-year old Latina transgender woman was found murdered in her home in Greeley, CO. It appears that there may be anti-transgender motive in this brutal crime.
It is believed that the suspect has stolen Angie’s sister’s car, a very dark
forest green 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser with the Colorado license plate number 441ORN. There
is a hubcap missing on the front passenger-side tire and there is paint missing
on the front bumper on the driver-side, under the headlight. Anyone with
information about the car is asked to call the Greeley police through the communications
center, 970-350-9600.
“We want to get the whole community involved to find this person who hurt
my sister and to let everyone be aware that all she wanted was to be beautiful.
We want this violence to end. Transgender people deserve to be treated with
respect,” said Angie’s sister Monica.
The family appreciates community support but has requested that all media
contacts be directed to the Colorado Anti-Violence Program. The family
encourages community attendance at Angie Zapata’s service this evening with
visitation from 6-7 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Healing Place, 17801 E. 160th Ave.
(Bridge Street),
Brighton. In addition, community members
may support the family by making contributions to Angie Zapata’s memorial fund.
Contributions may be made at Academy Bank in Wal-Mart, 60 W. Bromley Lane, Brighton
or checks made payable to Monica Murquia may be mailed to CAVP at P.O. Box 181085, Denver,
CO 80218.
Community organizations have pulled together to both support the victim’s
family after this shocking attack and respond to a community reeling from the
brutality of the hate crime. Hate or bias related crimes, such as
physical assault, hate speech or vandalism, are crimes that are motivated by
hostile feelings against an identifiable social group.
“Hate crimes differ from other crimes motivated by economic gain or
personal animosity. They are message crimes that are meant to instill
fear and a sense of vulnerability in an entire group, in this case the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community,” said Crystal
Middlestadt, Director of Training and Education of the Colorado Anti
Violence Program (CAVP).
“A hate crime like this serves to intimidate and disrupt an entire
community,” added Kelly Costello, Director of Victim Services at
CAVP. “No one should ever live their lives in fear and intimidation
regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. While we work
to show everyone the gravity of hate crimes and the importance of preventing
their reoccurrence, we also work towards building a world where everyone enjoys
human rights and the ability to live with dignity and respect.”
——
On Thursday, July 17, Angie Zapata, an 18-year old Latina transwoman
was murdered in her home in Greeley, CO. She suffered two severe
fractures in her skull. Her family believes that she was murdered by
her boyfriend or members of her boyfriend’s gang because of her gender
identity.
The Greeley Tribune, a local newspaper reporting on this case,
continues to use an incorrect name and pronouns for Angie. Her family
has been very supportive of her and are both angry and upset at this
lack of accuracy and sensitivity in reporting. Please let the Greeley
Tribune know that this is not acceptable and their lack of appropriate
reporting is contributing to an environment where violence against
transgender people is continuing. Contact information for the
newspaper, editor and reporter is below.
The perpetrator has stolen Angie’s sister’s car, a very dark forest
green 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser with the Colorado license plate number
441ORN. There is a hubcap missing on the front passenger-side tire and
there is paint missing on the front bumper on the driver-side, under
the headlight. Anyone with information about the car is asked to call
the Greeley police through the communications center, 970-350-9600. In
addition, Angie’s cell phone and wallet were also stolen.
All media contacts should be directed to Kelly Costello, Director of
Victim Services at the Colorado Anti-Violence Program (CAVP) at either

within and against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer
communities in Colorado.

Protesting transsexual found dead in Sevilla
By h.b. – Jul 20, 2008 – 10:40 AM
F.P. had spent some time protesting about a ‘police mafia’ in the city of Sevilla.
Firemen in Sevilla have found the body of a transsexual in the city murdered in her home. F.P. was in the process of changing sex from a man to a woman and had been demonstrating almost every day outside the courts in Sevilla claiming a ‘police mafia’ in the city. The protest consisted of F.P. always wearing the same white skirt, and a t-shirt with messages against the police.
The protest had continued for such a time that local civil servants and court workers had got used to it and considered it inoffensive.
But news is now released that F.P. was found dead at home last Friday July 11 in the La Barzola area of the city after neighbours alerted the fire service because of the smell. The autopsy has revealed that death was caused by a stabbing in the throat and police investigations are continuing.

Anarchist Rosa Pazos has been murdered
Date Thu, 24 Jul 2008 21:26:45 +0300
On the eleventh of July Rosa Pazos, sevillian anarchist and transexual activist,
died after being stabbed. The Local Federation of Unions of the CNT-AIT in
Seville and her comrades want to express what follows: —- Rosa always said she
would be murdered one day, but nobody took her seriously. Mournfully, facts have
finally shown her to be right: we know from mass media that she was found dead
at home by firemen, on the eleventh of July, and only afterwards, in the autopsy
practised in the Anathomic-Forensic Institute, was revealed that the cause of
her death had been a stabbing on her thorax. Due to this, a prosecution has
begun and secret summary has been decreed.
Very few people accepted her the way she was throughout her life, not even
her family, and very few paid her attention, but far from unravelling she
always faced society’s reject due to her triple condition of transexual,
anarchist and diseased.
Rosa has been a fighter all her life, she has fought for her right to be
recognized as the woman she was, for her right to a proper medical
treatment, for her right to be socially and professionally accepted, for
her freedom of speech, for her right to intimity, etcetera. A constant and
unequal fight that she has always faced from a libertarian perspective,
which has lead her to denounce systematically institutions and public
powers, whose bureaucracy, as usual, has turned into nothing these rights.
For many years, her t-shirts, her banners, her acts of protest, her
performances facing a jury, her denounces to the SAS, to the police and to
the courts, have been frequently dismissed, ridiculed (we must include
here the sadly transphobic report of EFE agency notifying her death), but
in all these cases appears the denounce of the hypocrisy of public powers,
which never look where they should.
Rosa was never affiliated to the CNT, her personality and circumstances
drove her to act individually and independently, but she nevertheless
cooperated restlessly with the union and she always showed solidarity in
all the struggles we have had: quietly, without drawing attention towards
her, almost anonymously, she has always supported epic struggles, such as
Tomares or Grúa Municipal strikes, and she has always done her bit
whenever she has been able to, in labour and social affairs.
>From the Local Federation of Unions of the CNT-AIT in Seville we want to
make public our recognition to comrade Rosa Pazos, and we want as well to
express our deepest consternation for the news of her assassination. We
demand from the Police and from Judicial Institutions a steady
clarification of the facts and the imposition of the consequences that may
correspond to those who are responsible of her death.
Anarchist comrade Rosa, we will never forget you, nor your struggle. May
earth be mild to you.

murder mystery.
A body was found steps away from a daycare, an abandoned apartment
complex and a strip club. News Channel 3 has also learned the victim
is transgendered. Police may now use that as a clue.
The victim’s body was found early Tuesday morning in the 32-hundred
block of Whitebrook Plaza in southeast Memphis.
Where the victim died is raising questions.
Detectives were back out in the area several hours after clearing
the scene talking with people at the nearby strip club off of Old
Getwell and Lamar.
News Channel 3 has also learned the transgendered victim may have
been found naked.
Advocates say transgendered people tend to be targets of crime.
Jonathan Cole with the Tennessee Equality Project says,
“Transgendered individual are often the victims of crime mainly
because we know that people are homophobic or transphobic.”
The apartment building where the body was found has been abandoned
for months. Folks at the daycare, just yards away, were shocked.
A daycare worker discovered the body around 7 Tuesday morning.
Workers and parents blame the abandoned apartment for attracting the
crime.
John Bowers drives vans for Rainbow Kids daycare and says, “Right
now it’s probably not a good area to be abandoned, anything can
happen over here.”
Concerned mother, Kay Taylor, says, “Where it is and it being
renovated, it really doesn’t surprise me and I was hoping that they
would renovate it soon and they would move some more businesses in
so it can be developed and everything.”
Taylor says because the area is remote, it’s no surprise a body was
found here. Others say it’s enough to take their kids elsewhere.
Kim Jones says, “I’m sorry for the person who died, but I think I’m
going to have to move my children away from this daycare.”
Parents at the daycare say this is the second murder there in a
year. One man said he heard a gunshot early in the morning, but
police are not providing any details about this case other than to
say an adult male was dead on arrival.

Memphis (Tenn. ) Memphis Police are investigating the death of Rodney Whitaker, age 20, an African American transgendered woman who was found on July 1, just steps away from a daycare, an abandoned apartment complex and a strip club.WREG-TV in Memphis broke the news and reported that Whitaker was left naked and that police were investigating the crime as a possible murder. A daycare worker discovered the body around 7 a.m. Tuesday and WREG said that parents at the daycare say this is the second murder there in a year. One man said he heard a gunshot early in the morning, but police are not providing any details about this case other than to say an adult male was dead on arrival, according to WREG.
“The specific circumstances leading to her death are not known at this time,” said Tennessee Equality Project President Christopher Sanders. “But there is reason to believe this is a hate crime fueled by transphobia. Memphis police officers are searching for any possible witnesses. If you have information that could aid police, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.” The murder is the latest in a string of hate crimes against the Memphis transgender community and prompted a group of citizens to bring it to the attention of the Memphis City Council at their meeting on Tuesday. That group included members of the Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition (TTPC). “We consider these two recent crimes, combined with the still unsolved murder of another African American transgender woman, Tiffany Berry on February 16, 2006, to be totally unacceptable,” said Marisa Richmond, president of TTPC. “The lack of response by the Memphis Police Department and the Shelby County to the beating of Duanna Johnson has set a tone in the community that the lives of transgender people, especially African American transwomen, are irrelevant.” Richmond will appear this weekend on Out and About Today, and will talk about these brutal hate crimes against transgender persons, along with several other topics of interest. Out and About Today is broadcast on NewsChannel 5+ and will debut on Friday, July 4, at 10:00 pm, CDT, and will repeat on Saturday at 9:30 pm, CDT, and Sunday at 10:00 pm, CDT. NewsChannel 5+ can be found on Nashville Cable at Channel 50. If you do not live in Nashville, check your local listings to see if NewsChannel 5+ is available in your area. “We insist that local authorities aggressively investigate and prosecute these and other hate crimes against transgender, as well as gay, lesbian, and bisexual, people. It is also time for the State of Tennessee to add ‘gender identity or expression’ to the Hate Crimes Enhancement Factors in Tennessee Code Annotated 40-35-114 (23), and for the Federal Government to pass the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act,” Richmond said. Sanders said members of the Shelby County Committee of TEP was interviewed by local media about the incident, and they had learned that while investigators suspect foul play, the medical examiner has not determined the cause of death. “We call on the Memphis Police Department to be expedient, yet thorough, in its investigation of this sensitive matter,” Sanders said. “We also join those throughout Memphis and Tennessee in mourning and extending our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Rodney Whitaker. This horrible incident serves as a reminder to our communities and elected officials of the necessity to add gender identity/expression to existing state and federal hate crime laws so that these terrible acts can be properly recorded, investigated and prosecuted as hate crimes.” —————————————————————————————————————————— |

Transgender activist from Wisconsin killed while on Mexico vacation
“I did witness the murder and chased the accused…. The rest of our group is coping. I will say the Puerto Vallarta Police have been absolutely amazing working on this horrifying murder.”
Travel agent, Terry Halverson, in an e-mail to The Capital Times regarding the stabbing death of Felicia Melton-Smyth, a transgendered activist and fundraiser of Madison, Wisconsin. The Associated Press reports that the man who confessed to the killing, Francisco Javier Hollos, said he did so because she would not pay for sex. (The Capital Times)
“If she were here [right] now, if she were looking over us she’d be like, ‘It’s Memorial Day, and there are military veterans that have lost their lives. I’m not a hero.’ But in my eyes she was…. She was just one of those people who would give and give and give and didn’t want anything in return…. Just as long as she could make someone smile, that was Felicia’s life. She wanted to make people happy.”
Dan Leamy, a friend of the victim, reflecting on the well-liked activist’s dedication to AIDS fundraising. It is reported that Melton-Smyth’s will specified funeral arrangements where “she wanted a party, a celebration of her life complete with music and toys for the holiday drive.” A memorial has been set up at GayMadison.org (Channel 3000)

Portugal
Transphobia kills again: international call for action!
Two years after the brutal murder of Gisberta, in Oporto , another transsexual woman was murdered and her body placed in a rubble dumpster in the Lisbon area last month.
Other crimes followed, shocking the country. However, the surge of violence cannot hide neither the victims nor the nature of these crimes. This is the case of Luna, 42, partially deaf, of Brazilian origin, for many years resident and worker in Portugal , prostitute at Conde de Redondo area (in Lisbon ).
Two years after Gisberta, transsexual people are still targets for hatred and violence based on prejudice and ignorance. The crime is under investigation and under justice secret, so we know very few about its circumstances or about its motivation; we hope the investigation undertaken by the Police can provide answers.
Nevertheless, we know that transphobia kills and that trans people are more prone to suffer violence than the majority. We know prostitution is often a job for those who have no other way of earning a living, and that it is hard to have a gender different from the one your body suggests. We know prejudice and discrimination are pervasive, that ignorance feeds hatred and generates violence. We know the State, society, all of us, have responsibilities towards the deadly victims, and mainly towards all those other people in whose life the fight for survival coexists with fear and the risks that cause it.
Luna was born a woman although her body suggested otherwise; her body, masculine, didn’t fit her identity. She was being followed at Hospital de Santa Maria by the multidisciplinary team in charge of helping trans people change their bodies; she had projects, wishes and frustrations just like anyone else. She was dear to some people and maybe wished to go back to Brazil , where her family lives. Luna was a woman who fought against many obstacles and, according to newspapers, died victim of great violence, possibly fed by hatred, prejudice and ignorance. Her body was left in a dumpster, hidden by rubble and dust, as if it was garbage, as if her life had not been worth living.
Like all potential victims, trans people need forms of protection that guarantee equality of opportunities and the possibility of a dignified life. They need, like everyone else, of being able to Exercise their rights to the development of personality and to self determination – of being able to freely choose their name; they don’t need (nobody does!) identification documents that insist on the use of criteria so voided of real content such as “sex” (even if disguised only as “name”) and “justify”, e.g., placing a trans woman in a detention cell with men. Trans people need being seen as people with rights and duties, no more and no less than all other people. Trans people in Portugal need the pedagogy of visibility, way beyond the prostitution or night shows circles. And Portugal needs to see these people without prejudice and fear.
Gender identity is subject the State should have already legislated about; this delay aggravates many trans people’s living (or survival) conditions. When will the legal amendments that allow the actual Exercise of civil rights by transsexual and transgendered people come? When will we have legislation that overcomes many politicians” retrograding and conservatism and stops to impose petty restrictions? When will we have legislation that stops feeding the daily psychological violence against these people? When will we have legislation that clearly considers that transphobia constitutes aggravating grounds for discrimination, harassment and violence? When will we have a serious commitment towards stopping cases like those of Gisberta and Luna, murdered out of transphobic hatred? When will police forces be provided with more human resources and more and better civic and technical training? When will cooperative approaches substitute the aggressive attitudes lingering among members of the various police forces?
Panteras Rosa – Frente de combate à GayLesBiTransfobia (Pink Panthers – Combat front against GayLesBiTransphobia) reaffirm their commitment towards fighting against transphobia in all of its forms and pay tribute to Luna, prostitute in our city, woman just because!
Lisbon, March 13 2008
Proposal for International Action: on the 24th, 25th or 26th March
That vigils are held, with candles, in special memory of Luna and all of the trans people victim of transphobia.
To be developed by numerous small and big groups in the most (small to big) cities possible.
With banners, just in front of Portuguese embassies or consulates in the cities where they may exist or, for other cities, in squares in front of European ministries, in front of psychiatric hospitals or whichever places contribute to transphobia.
We suggest the following phrases:
Luna trans 42 years old Brazilian, prostitute murdered in Lisbon .
Statistically, how many times more is a trans person in risk of being victim of violence compared to you? And murdered?
According to the context of each country we suggest the phrase:
Stop transphobic laws. How much longer for a law against transphobia?
Or for countries that still haven’t turned transphobia into law:
How much longer for a law against transphobia?
This case is not Portugal specific, it is international and the fight efforts should be done together.
(In practical terms, it should be simpler to organize small groups in different places instead of asking people to mobilize to the Portuguese embassies that are concentrated on the capital cities)
We ask you to publicize this action, to participate in big numbers and to forward testimonials, photos, articles, etc. to [email protected]
The media strengthen transphobia
After the recent murder of one more transexual woman, Luna, occurred in the area of Lisbon , the media focus on the physical aspect of the victims in the most sensationalist manner – thus making it more important than the murder itself. A few words about the murder follow, as if this is was a clear and natural explanation of the cause of such murder – lingering in the detaileded description of the unusual physical aspect of the victim. At the hands of the media the most important becomes the victim’s unusual body, placing the murder on the background.
Speaking – depending on the attempt (or not) not to seem transphobic – of a transsexual with a man’s body (a pruddish way to say “with penis”), of a man dressed in women’s clothes, or of a transvestite with breasts. Some even speak of homophobia.
The picture emerging of such articles is that the victim is a monstrosity displayed to feed the public curiosity, without any respect neither for her gender nor for the intimacy of her body, and giving the impression that it is almost (or even absolutely) normal that these people be murdered.
The other image conveyed in this way is that being trans is wanting to mislead “the world” by using a disguise particularly well arranged to give a misleading appearance of men and women… And if they deceive the world is of course natural that the deceived people react.
This kind of speech from the media is, unfortunately, far from applying only to murder — it is used in almost all broadcasts, articles, and interviews on trans subjects.
The Portuguese media, with no exception, satisfy also with the description of the trans person’s precarity situation – wether it is on prostitution, drugs, having HIV, no papers, no house – as if these lives were a choice of the victims, describing them hiding that it is transphobia that generates this precarity, and presenting as scandalous not only the “choice” of being trans, but also the choice of the life style, turning the victims into immoral and chocking persons and continuing in this way to promote transphobia, the precarity of the trans lives, and the fact that they are among the persons most likely to suffer agression. The presence of the trans person in the Mental Diseases List, to frequently legitimates the media, when they concede expression to the trans, to credit or discredit it trough persons of the medical corps, reinforcing the idea that the word of a trans has no value for itself.

Gay teen shot dead while dressed as woman in Fort Lauderdale
By Brian Haas and Sofia Santana
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
February 23, 2008
FORT LAUDERDALE
The shooting death of a gay teenage boy who was dressed in women’s clothing is being investigated as a possible hate crime, while detectives try to determine whether he was targeted because of his sexual orientation.
Simmie Williams Jr., 17, was attacked on the 1000 block of Sistrunk Boulevard by two young men who wore dark clothing and might live in the neighborhood, police said. Williams, who was wearing a dress and was known in the area by his first name or as “Chris” or “Beyonce,” was shot about 12:45 a.m. Friday and soon afterward died at Broward General Medical Center, police said. It’s unclear what Williams was doing in the area, about four miles from his house, but police are investigating whether he was working as a prostitute, officials said.
Williams’ mother said her son was openly gay, but she didn’t know what he did when he went out at night, and she didn’t know he wore women’s clothes.
“I gave him $2 for the bus and he never came back,” said Denise King, who lived with her son west of Fort Lauderdale. “He was a quiet person, kept to himself. He had a lot of friends. He wasn’t a troubled child. He was a happy person.”
At the same time, being black, gay and dressing in women’s clothing made Williams “a minority within a minority within a minority,” said Grant Lynn Ford, dean of Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale, a church that ministers to gays, lesbians and their families.
Sometimes people picked on Williams, but he knew how to brush it off, his mother said.
Williams had signed up Wednesday for Job Corps, a federal government program designed to teach students vocational skills. He planned to get his GED and then go to culinary school, his mother said.
“That’s what he really wanted to do. That’s all he talked about,” said King. “He spent the whole day with me yesterday, played with his nephew and cooked dinner.”
Then he left the house Thursday night to go to Sistrunk, where the family lived at one point, she said. A few hours later, he was dead.
“We’re looking into the possibility of a hate crime. There were some words exchanged prior to the shooting,” said Detective Katherine Collins, spokeswoman for Fort Lauderdale police. She would not elaborate on what was said before Williams was killed.
Any case where investigators or prosecutors determine that a victim was targeted based on race, color, ancestry, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, mental or physical disability or advanced age can be deemed a hate crime. The label adds extra time to criminal sentences, upon conviction.
The corner where Williams was found is a popular hang-out for transgender prostitutes, police and residents said.
Sharia Ranson said she has noticed them from her home in the Oak Park apartments at Sistrunk Boulevard and Northwest 10th Avenue, where she has lived for two years.
Wearing dresses and makeup, they often stood in groups of three to five, Ranson said.
However, they are usually older than Williams, police said.
“Most of the time you see adults,” said Detective Brice Brittenum, Fort Lauderdale police liaison to the gay and lesbian community.
In January 2003, about a half mile from where Williams was shot, a transgender prostitute was killed in the 500 block of Northwest 21st Avenue.
Timothy Broadus, 21, who also went by “Cinnamon” and wore women’s clothing and a blond wig, was shot several times by a driver he had approached, police said at the time.
The case remains unsolved.
Anyone with information on Williams’ death is asked to call Detective Mark Breen at 954-828-5708 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).

Local trans murder victim identified

DETROIT – The identity of a young transgender woman found dead in Detroit Feb. 4 was revealed late last week in response to a FOIA request filed by this newspaper. The Detroit Police Department announced that the body found dumped near the intersection of Canfield and Ellery streets on Detroit’s East Side was that of Michael Dionthe Sweeney. Between The Lines has also learned that the victim was more commonly known by the name of Ashley and will, henceforth, refer to her as such.
Sweeney, police have said, was known to work as a sex worker in the area of Woodward Avenue and Seven Mile Road. Shot in the head at an unknown location, her body was then dumped on the city’s East Side.
Little else is known about the circumstances of Sweeney’s death or, for that matter, Sweeney herself. Friends are fearful and have been loathe to come forward with information, and the family isn’t speaking. What’s more, coverage of the crime in the mainstream media has been minuscule.
In stark contrast to Sweeney’s case, a similar murder that took place two weeks ago in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. has been garnering a great amount of attention.
Simmie Williams, Jr., a sensitive 17-year-old, had recently signed up for Job Corps and aspired to attend culinary school and become a chef. Instead, he was shot to death Feb. 22. At the time, Williams, who was openly-gay and lived with a supportive mother, was dressed as a woman and walking in an area frequented by transgender sex workers. An article in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel said that Williams was known in the area by the pseudonyms “Chris” and “Beyonce.”
Since the shooting, the grassy field on Sistrunk Boulevard where Williams was gunned down has become a shrine filled with votive candles, colorful flowers and teddy bears. There was even a vigil held at the spot last week with more than 100 mourners in attendance, and a $10,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to an arrest.
Though there is no reward being offered in the Sweeney case, if you have any information you are urged to contact Melissa Pope at the Triangle Foundation at 313-537-3323 x 112.

Found dead at apartment block
Kota Kinabalu: A suspected transvestite in his 20s was found dead with injuries along an alley beside Likas Square building in Likas, early Tuesday.
The deceased, only known as ‘Fedra’, was spotted lying face up in a pool of blood by a resident of the apartment building who was driving out from there before 6.30am. He had tyre marks on his body.
The resident alerted the security guard who informed the receptionists on duty to call the police. He was clad in a red long-sleeved T-shirt, black bra and black pants.
City Police Chief ACP Ahmad Sofi Zakaria, who was also there together with the police and forensic teams, believed Fedra was a visitor/outsider because his name was not on the residence’s name list.
Investigations are continuing and hoped those with information would come forward. Police have so far brought in one man to assist in the investigations.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder in Monday night’s
shooting death of Adolphus Simmons at Bradford Apartments in North
Charleston.
Police did not release the suspect’s name because he is a juvenile,
but they said he lived in the area of the apartments, which are on
Bream Road near Dorchester Road at the head of the Evanston Estates
community.
Spencer Pryor, North Charleston police public information officer,
said the boy is in the custody of the state Department of Juvenile
Justice.
Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said her office was waiting
to receive more information about the case from police before
deciding whether to ask that the youth be charged as an adult.
Prosecutors have 10 days to make the request to a judge, who would
have the ultimate say. If the judge were to agree, the case would be
sent from Family Court to General Sessions.
Simmons, 18, who dressed as a woman and was doing freelance work as
a hairstylist, was shot multiple times about 8 p.m. Monday when he
took out his trash, witnesses said.
Pryor has said that investigators found nothing to suggest that
Simmons’ slaying was a hate crime. On Thursday, he said police were
not releasing a motive for the killing.
Simmons’ mother, Felicia Moultrie, said a group of people about two
weeks ago had burst into the apartment where Simmons was staying,
but Simmons was not home. “They were looking for him,” she said.
Asked if police anticipate making additional arrests, Pryor said
only that the case remains under investigation.
Moultrie said news of the arrest has helped her to deal somewhat
with her son’s death.
“It took a little pressure off me. I feel a little bit better today
because of that news,” Moultrie said. “Right now I need to know why.
What triggered them to take my son away from me?”
In an unrelated case, a 14-year-old boy was convicted of murder last
month in Family Court for the Aug. 11 shooting of Larry Thomas
Jenkins of North Charleston.
The teen, who was not named because of his age, fired into a moving
car on Constitution Avenue, killing Jenkins. He was sent to the
Department of Juvenile Justice for a 45-day evaluation before
sentencing. He could be sentenced to a juvenile facility until he is
21.

First Albuquerque homicide of 2008 marked by gender confusion
By Maggie Shepard
Albuquerque Tribune – NM,USA
Thursday, January 10, 2008
http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2008/jan/10/first-albuquerque-homicide-2008-marked-gender-conf/
Police took some time to decide whether the person found shot to
death at an apartment complex near Gibson and San Mateo boulevards
was a man or a woman.
They now say the victim of the city’s first homicide is a man,
Patrick Murphy, 39.
“I don’t know what he called himself, because he’s not around to
say,” Albuquerque Police Department spokesman John Walsh said.
Murphy appeared to be a woman when police arrived at the Brandywood
Park Apartments where suspect Dana Madsen, 33, told police “there’s
a girl upstairs who didn’t deserve to be shot,” according to a Metro
Court criminal complaint.
Murphy had been shot several times in the head with a handgun, which
was also found at the scene, according to the complaint.
Madsen called police Tuesday at about 5:15 p.m. to report a shooting
at his apartment, No. 22 at 5851 Anderson Ave. S.E.
When officers arrived, they found a body, with long brown hair, face
down near the door.
Because police don’t move a body until it has been processed by the
Office of the Medical Investigator and crime-scene technicians, they
at first weren’t sure if the body was a man or a woman.
Madsen only referred to Murphy as a female and a “drag queen,”
according to the complaint.
Madsen said Murphy had been drinking and started arguing with him
and threatening him with a knife.
Madsen said he got a gun from his bedroom for protection. When he
saw a small pocket knife in Murphy’s hand, he shot Murphy in the
head, according to the complaint.
Murphy dropped to the ground, then Madsen shot Murphy in the head
again, but Murphy was still “shaking and screaming” so another shot
was fired into his head to “put him out of his misery,” the
complaint says.
Madsen was “calm and cooperative” with police, Walsh said.
Madsen is in the Metropolitan Detention Center on an open count of
murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million cash or surety bond.

According to 365Gay.com:
(Albuquerque, New Mexico) A 33-year old man is charged with murder in the brutal killing of Patrick Murphy regarded by most in Albuquerque’s LGBT community as a drag icon.
Police allege that Dana Madsen shot Murphy three times in the head. He was arrested shortly after calling police to report a shooting inside his apartment.
Madsen is behind held in lieu of $1 million cash or surety bond.
Investigators say that Madsen was relatively new in Albuquerque. He once faced attempted murder charges in El Paso.
Under questioning Madsen admitted shooting Murphy several times in the head – the last time to “put her out of her misery” because she was laying on the ground screaming and shaking. Madsen told police that before he fired the final shot Murphy had called him an “ass.”
Madsen claims that Murphy had a pocket knife and threatened to kill him in his sleep, something police and people who knew Murphy disbelieve.
The two had met at Sidewinders, a local gay bar, weeks earlier. Locals told the Tribune newspaper that Madsen regularly wore a cowboy hat to the bar and talked about riding bulls. He was attracted to drag queens at the club patrons told the paper.

Man pleads guilty, but denies killing
By Kimball Perry • [email protected] • August 20, 2008
Mattie McGlothin approached the judge Tuesday, looking to end the
longest wait of her life.Since Dec. 23, she’s waited to hear why her youngest of 10 children,
Brian McGlothin, was shot and killed in Westwood.“I’m sitting there (at home) waiting for him to come back, and the
next thing I know, the police is at my door,” the mother said Tuesday.“I look for him every day to hear him coming in the door,” she said.
Antonio Williams, who accepted a Monday plea deal that allowed him to
escape a murder trial and a potential life sentence, was sent to
prison for six years for the killing, but Williams continued to deny
he killed McGlothin.“I feel sorry for his mom or whatever, (but) I’m not pleading to it
because I did it,” Williams said Tuesday.Williams, 18, was set to go to trial Monday on the original murder charge.
When Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Rick Gibson offered a plea
deal, though, Williams took it.Williams was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and having a weapon
following a drug conviction. He faced a maximum of 13 years in prison.
Gibson admitted he had a problem with the case, so he agreed to allow
Williams to be sentenced to the minimum prison sentence possible – six
years.“Nobody that was there is talking,” he said. “We never did know what
the motive was.”Brian McGlothin, dressed in women’s clothes, was shot in the head with
an automatic rifle two days before Christmas. His body was found in
the rear yard of a house in the 2700 block of Ruberg Avenue.Authorities say Williams shot McGlothin in the head and then went to a
neighboring street, Talbott Avenue, and fired another burst from an
automatic assault rifle.“We’re not even sure these two knew each other,” Gibson said.
One witness told police he saw a man he believed was Williams running
from the scene with something in his hand.Williams, with advice from his attorney, Pete Rosenwald, accepted the
plea deal, saying he didn’t want to take the chance of a jury
convicting him of murder.Williams will be 24 when his six-year prison term imposed by Common
Pleas Judge William Mallory ends.Williams was sentenced to three years in prison for the killing and
another three years for having a gun after he was convicted as a
juvenile for marijuana possession.Copyright ©2008 The Enquirer. All rights reserved.
